Kunzite

"Evening Stone"

Kunzite, a captivating gemstone of the spodumene family, is celebrated for its delicate and enchanting hues of pink to violet, often exhibiting pleochroism, displaying different shades from various angles, evoking tranquility and grace, making it a cherished gem for elegant jewellery and admired by collectors for its subtle beauty and unique optical properties. Its beautiful coloration arises from trace amounts of manganese within its crystal structure, with colour intensity varying by manganese content and potentially fading with prolonged strong light or heat exposure due to oxidation state changes; typically forming in lithium-rich pegmatite deposits alongside other gem minerals, significant sources include Afghanistan, Brazil, Madagascar, Myanmar, and the United States (California), with its relatively recent discovery in 1902 in California, named after gemologist George Frederick Kunz. With a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale and a vitreous lustre, typically transparent to translucent, kunzite is reasonably durable for jewellery, though its perfect cleavage makes it susceptible to fracturing upon sharp impact; beyond its delicate beauty, it is often associated with love, compassion, and emotional healing, believed to open the heart chakra, promoting peace, joy, and inner harmony, releasing negative emotions, encouraging self-love, and in crystal healing, used to alleviate stress and anxiety, support circulation, promote restful sleep, its gentle violet hues also connecting to the crown chakra, fostering spiritual awareness. Due to its sensitivity to heat and light, special care is needed, avoiding prolonged direct sunlight or heat sources to prevent colour fading.
