It often occurs in fibrous aggregates or radiating crystal masses, giving it a unique texture and appearance. Its name honors the French paleontologist Eugène Dumortier, who first described it in 1881. While blue is the most well-known colour, Dumortierite can also be found in violet, pink, brown, and even green varieties, though these are less common for lapidary purposes. Significant deposits of gem-quality Dumortierite are found in Brazil, Canada, France, Madagascar, Namibia, Sri Lanka, and the United States. With a hardness of 7 to 8.5 on the Mohs scale, Dumortierite is a relatively hard and durable gemstone, making it suitable for various jewelry applications. Its lustre is typically vitreous (glassy) to silky, especially in fibrous forms, and it ranges from translucent to opaque. While not possessing the long historical significance of some other gemstones, Dumortierite has gained recognition in the gem and mineral collecting world for its beautiful blue color and its purported metaphysical properties.
